CASHMAN'S BACKERS HAVE THE BOSS' EAR  —  Just like a year ago, when GM Brian Cashman talked George Steinbrenner out of firing Joe Torre, there are voices within the Yankee organization telling The Boss that boxing Cashman isn't the right move.  —  Steinbrenner put his GM in the crosshairs Friday when he said, "He is on a big hook."

Marlins' Tankersley says 'nothing wrong'  —  · Nothing's wrong physically.  Mentally, he's fine, too.  Nothing has gone haywire mechanically.  —  Unless Taylor Tankersley is going through a spiritual crisis, his struggles are tough to explain.  —  Monday, Tankersley opened the ninth inning with a 5-0 lead.

Bonds Update 5-29  —  Well, Bonds finally broke his three-week skid, homering for the first time since May 8 (and, incidentally, for the first time since I started doing this.)  His fifty-percent cumulative score improved by five dates as a result, moving back before the All-Star break.

Melting in the Texas Heat  —  The Texas Rangers have the worst record in baseball.  They're worse than the Nationals, worse than the Devil Rays, worse than the Royals.  Given that I had them winning 89 games and the AL West, and being one of the top five teams in baseball, you could say that they've been a disappointment to me.

HYPOCRISY: BOOING BONDS AS MOTA RETURNS  —  THESE will be tricky times for Mets fans, these next couple of days.  It may not be the first priority on the fans' bill of rights to avoid hypocrisy at all costs, but the fact is that New Yorkers like to consider themselves baseball's conscience and its cognoscenti.
