Beltran takes home first Gold Glove  —  Mets center fielder made just two errors in 372 chances in '06  —  NEW YORK — Carlos Beltran has often been named as one of baseball's top defensive outfielders.  The next time he patrols the Shea Stadium outfield, he'll have some serious hardware to back up that reputation.

Matsuzaka tampering charged  —  NEW YORK — At least three teams have attempted under-the-table negotiations to obtain Japanese ace Daisuke Matsuzaka, a Japanese newspaper reported.  Major League Baseball said yesterday that nothing has been brought to its attention.

YANKS' PLANS: KEEP MOOSE, DEAL SHEFF  —  The Yankees intend to sign Mike Mussina to a two-year contract and trade Gary Sheffield, sooner rather than later on both moves, to initiate an offseason plan in which they will emphasize upgrading their rotation, bullpen, catching and - if possible - farm system.

Kasten defends managerial search  —  The Washington Nationals likely will name their new manager within the next two weeks, according to team president Stan Kasten, who insisted the search to replace Frank Robinson has proceeded as planned despite perception around baseball to the contrary.
